New Beginning (Piano Sketch) 1:05
New Beginning (Orchestral) 1:05

The piece NEW BEGINNING has 2 versions. The first is a piano sketch that I composed while at the piano. Once I conceive of an idea , I first work out the melodic structure and the harmonies at the piano. After I am satisfied with that, I decide on the orchestral colors I want for the finished piece. This involves the choice of musical instruments that I want to have play the composition. The piano sketch serves as a guide to the final orchestration/arrangement, as counter melodies and rhythms need to be added to make the piece fuller sounding. The piano sketch took about 30 minutes to compose and write out, while the orchestral piece took considerably longer.

As with all of my orchestrations/arrangements, I compose at the computer, entering each note that you hear into a music writing program one note at a time. This is entered onto a music score sheet that I set up in the program. The end result always retains the spirit of the original, but to give it a fuller sound, the bulk of the actual composing is done during this phase. I preview in my mind how I want to final composition to sound and then set out to write the parts for each of those instruments. It is very time consuming and requires a great deal of concentration, but it is all extremely rewarding. Working from the sketch, the finished orchestration for NEW BEGINNING took about 12 hours from start to finish. It is slightly over one minute in length.

The orchestral arrangement is scored for Flute, Bb Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn in F, Bb Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, 4 Violin sections, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Acoustic String Bass, and Harp.

I hope you enjoy it!
